Gangbuster History!
First released in a mid-western city, Gangbuster created a wave
of excitement unparalleled in social/educational literature. Kids
around the city clamored for the 8-page comic book. Schools were
advised to wait until the end of the day to hand out the copies,
as kids were overwhelmingly excited about them.
The brand-new version of Gangbuster has been redone to fit contemporary
needs. The art, dialogue and story have been revamped to reflect
what is going on in today's streets and in
the minds of today's youngsters.
Gangbuster has become active once again because statistics show
that the need for truly effective gang-prevention measures has never
been more pressing -- and that intervention is needed at the earliest
possible ages.
This report was issued after Gangbuster's initial release:
A most effective way in combating youth gang activity is to strike
at one of its root causes: peer pressure. The comic book character
Gangbuster uniquely counters the problem by generating peer pressure
of his own, aimed AGAINST gang influence.
Aimed at pre-gang kids 8-12 years of age, Gangbuster was created
with the help of anti-gang
counselors and utilizes a to-the-point visual approach in showing
potential gang recruits the way NOT to go. It's preventative medicine.
And Gangbuster really works!
Gangbuster was so hot, school principals decided to distribute
it at the end of the school day, as kids excitedly embraced the
concept.
After several schools distributed Gangbuster to their students,
youth gang activity "decreasedmarkedly," according to
one counselor. Hundreds of letters were received from Gangbuster
fans -- parents and kids -- asking for more adventures featuring
the costumed superhero.
Anti-gang counselors identify with the superhero figure, saying
" we think of ourselves as super-people," and rightfully
so.
After Gangbuster's initial release, 84% of elementary school students
polled gave Gangbuster an overwhelming vote of approval.
Seventy percent of upper-age bracket, middle school students rated
it "Excellent". The rest of the respondents rated Gangbuster
"Good". Not one "fair" or "poor" vote
was received. Not one.
Why does Gangbuster work? This eight-page comic is simple and direct.
Kids readily identify with the individuals presented in the story.
And it's a fun read. More stories are planned for the future.
