GANGBUSTER INSTRUCTOR GUIDE
"Gangbuster" is designed to entertain and inform -- to
deliver a vital message that will be read and absorbed, as well
as create a positive role model that commands respect.
To get the full benefit of "Gangbuster," instructors
and community leaders should give the youngster's time to read the
comic book -- and then engage them in discussions about the characters,
their attitudes, and what is the message they get out of the book.
Among Potential Discussion Topics:
| · |
Why is Kevin attracted to the gang? |
| · |
What false promises do gang leaders make to trick
youngsters into joining? |
| · |
·Does the gang's leader really care about
the gang members? Where is he likely to spend most of his life? |
| · |
Is it better to be "baddest" or to do
your "best"? Why? |
| · |
What was your favorite part of the Gangbuster
story? |
| · |
What are your favorite sports and activities that
are more fun than gangs? |
Activities that Reinforce the "Gangbuster" Message:
| 1) |
Draw your own version of the superhero Gangbuster. |
| 2) |
Write a three-to-five sentence message: If I
were Gangbuster, I would tell all the kids to:______________________ |
| 3) |
Ask the group: What are good ways to solve problems
without fighting? |
| 4) |
Do you know anyone who has gone to jail? How
has it affected that person, those around him/her, and you? |
| 5) |
Write a Gangbuster rap song, rhyme or story. |
Remind Them Why Crime Doesn't Pay -- and Suggest Gang Alternatives:
| · |
Crime can lead to Jail and or Prison for the rest
of your life. |
| · |
In Florida children can be tried and convicted
as adults. |
| · |
Make sure youngsters have local "help"
hotline numbers and appropriate community-agency numbers. |
| · |
Encourage "latch-key" youngsters to
check out the Boys and Girls Clubs, Boys and Girls Scouts, after-school
recreational programs, Police Athletic Leagues, Basketball teams,
Baseball teams, Soccer Teams, Study Groups, Mentoring Groups,
Dance Classes, Karate Classes, and local clubs that will keep
them occupied. Hand out the organizations' phone numbers and
invite their representatives to speak to your classes or groups. |
| · |
Teach youngsters that the police are your friends
and that it's ok to tell the police about lawbreakers and they
can go to the police for help. |
